Nurturing Mental Well-being: Insights from SCEW Seminar

On 7th June, we had the privilege of attending a seminar conducted by Dr. Girija Mahale from the Symbiosis Centre for Emotional Well-being (SCEW), and the insights shared were invaluable. The core message emphasized the significance of mental well-being in achieving our goals. Dr. Mahale eloquently elaborated on various aspects of mental health, also offering guidance on understanding and overcoming mental illness.

Dr. Mahale highlighted the importance of recognizing emotions as driving forces in our lives, both positive and negative and stressed the need for managing emotions effectively, for they play a pivotal role in our decision-making process and overall well-being. She pointed out that transition periods are often accompanied by stress. Whether adjusting to new environments or navigating changes in relationships, there is a need for resilience and healthy coping mechanisms during these phases of life.

Dr. Mahale also pointed out that self-esteem plays a critical role in maintaining healthy self-esteem and refraining from comparing oneself to others is very important. Every individual possesses inherent worth and they should recognize their unique value. Dr. Mahale also discussed the impact of biological factors, particularly sleep deprivation, on mental health and she emphasized the critical role of adequate sleep in maintaining mood, immunity, and overall well-being.

Stress, a common phenomenon in today's fast-paced world, was dissected into useful and harmful forms.Dr. Mahale provided insights into identifying symptoms of distress, such as depression and anxiety, and emphasized the interconnectedness of mind and body. She also pointed out that Motivation, both intrinsic and extrinsic, is central to goal achievement, but their differences need to be appreciated . Dr. Mahale encouraged cultivating intrinsic motivators like purpose and interest, while also cautioning against the transient nature of extrinsic factors like money and grades. The importance of building mental resilience and fostering a supportive environment was underscored by Dr. Mahale and she also emphasized the role of self-care practices in nurturing mental well-being. Additionally, she highlighted the significance of diversity and empathy in creating inclusive communities.

In a commendable initiative, Dr. Swarali, a psychiatrist, was introduced as a resource available on campus, further emphasizing the institution's commitment to supporting students' mental health.

In conclusion, Dr. Mahale's seminar offered a holistic perspective on nurturing mental well-being, providing practical insights and strategies for achieving personal and academic goals. By prioritizing mental health and embracing resilience, individuals can embark on a journey towards a fulfilling and balanced life.
