PPO Chronicles #3: Hariharan Karthikeyan, Pidilite

Hariharan Karthikeyan, from 2018-20 batch, pursuing Marketing, did his internship with Pidilite Industries Limited

During his internship, Hariharan worked in the Consumer Products division of Pidilite on Fevicol A+, a product launched not long ago. His project was to analyse the impact of the marketing activities like TVCs, shelf strips, promotional packs (to name a few) done for Fevicol A+ and to come out with a strategy to scale the product.

It was an incredibly busy first month for him, travelling all across Kerala with hardly any time for reflection as it progressed. But looking back at it now, he avers that he learnt a lot and gained useful experience that will aid him in the future. Once in Kerala, Hariharan was on his way to a new district every 2 days, taking interviews and gaining insights from retailers, sometimes travelling for 6 hours in a day just to reach his pick-up point. All of this while being a novice in Malayalam.

His second month was comparatively relaxed and more interactive, as he went to his hometown, Chennai, to continue his research – this time with the consumers. Hariharan was also responsible for devising a strategy for rolling out new advertisements and marketing campaigns, pan India, and recommending the best possible way, following his extensive research.
By prioritizing consumer needs and frequenting market visits, Hariharan was able to get the recognition his work deserved. Additionally, the open-door culture in Pidilite allowed him to connect with his supervisors and build a good rapport, making the whole internship process smoother.

He advises the juniors to do the same. To quote the current Marketing batch topper, “Think different, but actionable, feasible solutions. Don’t lose yourself in the process of getting a PPO. Do your work diligently and remember that things may not always fall in place, but the learning is what really matters.”

Hariharan could not have better explained the need to stay focused and practical in terms of your ideas and approach towards solving problems for the brands.

Many congratulations and all the very best, from every one of us at SCMHRD.
