Odyssey ‘21- The confluence of thoughts

The Guest Lecture Team of SCMHRD brings the corporate frontier to the students and allows them to learn directly from the industry stalwarts. The valuable insights from the guest lectures complement classroom learning and let students hear directly from the who’s who of the business world.

2021 marked the third edition of the team’s flagship event, “Odyssey- Confluence of Thoughts.” The event had a series of panel discussions with esteemed industry experts on relevant topics of today’s world. The theme of the event was “Deep-diving the Technological Interventions in Business Management.” Five panel discussions were organized, which aligned with the various specializations offered at SCMHRD.

29th August, Day 1, the Finance Panel discussed “Understanding the Evolving Digital Payments Landscape.” The eminent guest speakers who graced the occasion with their presence were Mr. Jambunathan Narayanan, Ex Dy. MD & CIO, SBI; Mr. Sambasivan G, CFO, Tata Sky Ltd; Mr. Anurag Mittal, Dy. CFO, Snapdeal; Mr. Sudeep Bhatia, Group CFO, Lendingkart. Moderator for the session was Dr. Pankaj Sharma, HOD, Finance, SCMHRD. The panelists believed that there had been a substantial growth in digital payments in recent times and spoke at length about how the pandemic acted as a catalyst in its development.

On 30th August, the second day of the event saw the HR panel discussion on “Data-driven HR: Empowering Organizations, People and Performance”. The esteemed speakers who joined this panel discussion were Ms. Dhanashree Thakkar, Vice President – HR, Bharti AXA Life insurance; Mr. Rakesh Mehta, Senior Vice President and Head HR, JSW Energy Ltd; Mr. Santosh TK, HR Director, DELL Technologies; Mr. Omkar Anand, Head – Total Rewards, Henkel Adhesive Technologies India Pvt. Ltd. Dr. Netra Neelam, Deputy Director, SCMHRD was the moderator for the session. The panel opined that data-driven HR tools like dashboards, skill matrix attrition trends, and ratios are the need of the hour. The discussion concluded with the importance of HR Analytics in the changing HR world.

On 30th August, the second half of the day saw the IDM panel discussion on the theme “Leveraging Technology for Smart Urban Infrastructure Projects.”The eminent speakers who took part in this panel discussion were Mr. Sidharath Kapur, Advisor-AIF, SBI Mutual Fund; Mr. JVS Ramakrishna, CTO & Head – Strategy, L&T Smart World; Mr. Rajul Mehrotra, Director- Strategy & Smart Infrastructure, Xylem Inc.; Mr. Serbjeet Kohli, Director, Steer India, and Dr. Kedar Bhagwat, HOD, Infrastructure Development & Management, SCMHRD as the moderator. The panel discussed the need for infrastructure projects, airport modernization, and electric vehicles. The panel talked about urban transportation during the pandemic and its trends & challenges too. The discussion concluded that it is imperative that the government set solid policies for developing tier 1 and 2 cities.

On 31st August, the third day of the event began with the Marketing panel discussion on “Omnichannel Marketing Solutions in the New Normal: Emerging Channels, Critical Shifts, and New Opportunities.” The panel for this discussion comprised of Mr. Anirban Basu, Innovation Director, Danone; Mr. Ritesh Bhatnagar, CMO/Business Head, U2opia Mobile; Mr. Rajesh Rajyalakshmi Pantina, Director – Marketing, Asia-Pacific, Inmobi; Mr. Prasenjit Roy, Head of Marketing & Product, NTT; Mr. Akshay Nahar, Head of Marketing, Jombay; and Dr. Gauri Joshi, Faculty, SCMHRD as the moderator. The panel discussed that the rise of technology in marketing has aided in shortening decision making by eliminating guesswork and optimizing and targeting prospective customers – Omni-channel. The panel then talked about the challenges and possibilities to this approach concerning different prevalent industries of today.

On 31th August, the third day of the event saw the BA panel discussion on the theme “Data-driven strategic plan for a brand.”The panel discussion started with the introduction of the esteemed panelists, namely, Mr. Sajesh J, Vice President, J.P Morgan; Mr. Swapnil Tambi, Director AI & ML, BNY Mellon; Mr. Mathew Joseph, VP & Head- AI Labs, Apar Technologies; Mr. Anthony Devassy, Head Industry Consultant- Insurance, SAS; Ms. Smitha Suryanarayanan, Senior Director Insights & Business Analytics, Envestnet, Yodlee; Ms. Swati Gupta, Head of Digital & Analytics, Thoucentric and the moderator Mr. Suhas Ambekar, Associate Professor, SCMHRD. The panel discussed how the pandemic accelerated the collection of the right quality of business-specific data. They also touched upon the importance of AI and how organizations leverage data to drive profits home.

As the event concludes, the commitment of the Guest Lecture team towards making the event a success is commendable. It has always been zealous towards providing the right kind of corporate exposure to the students of SCMHRD and will continue to do so. The students too gained valuable insights by interacting with the industry leaders directly. SCMHRD looks forward to hosting many more panel discussions going forward.
