On the 6th of June, we celebrate Shiv Swarajya Din, the day Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was crowned and officially established Hindavi Swarajya-a kingdom by and for the people. As a student, this experience left a lasting impression on me, not just because of the stories shared, but because of the timeless leadership lessons we uncovered.
What stood out to me most was Shivaji Maharaj's vision. At just 15, he dreamt of Swaraj-a kingdom not for conquest or personal glory, but one rooted in fairness, justice, and responsibility. He called it Rayate Swaraj, meaning it belonged to the citizens. This shift in thinking-from ruler to trustee-s incredibly inspiring, especially in today,s world of power struggles.
We heard about how he separated military and civil administration, created organized tax systems, and ensured that soldiers were paid on time. But beyond systems, it was his ethical leadership that struck me. He set strict moral codes for his army, especially around respecting women and civilians. Crimes, particularly against women, were punished severely and immediately-something unheard of in many kingdoms of that time.
What also amazed me was his use of local knowledge. Aurangzeb, with all his might, couldn,t defeat Shivaji despite spending 25 years in the Deccan. Why? Because Shivaji had a deep understanding of terrain, people, and strategy. He valued localism over blind imitation of large empires.
Speakers also reflected on Shivaji,s early life-the hardships his mother Jijabai faced during his birth, and how her strength and teachings shaped him. He may not have had formal education or management training, but he had mentorship, values, and an unshakable belief in his mission. Some anecdotes made the session come alive-like the comparison between Baji Prabhu Deshpande,s last stand and the movie 300. These stories connected history with emotion and made it relatable.
Above all, what I take away is that leadership isn,t about titles or armies. It,s about fairness, empathy, vision, and unwavering commitment to your people. Shivaji Maharaj didn't rule through fear; he inspired loyalty. And that, to me, is what true leadership looks like.
Shiv Swarajya Din reminded me that we don,t need to look far for role models-we have a legacy of greatness right here. I feel proud, humbled, and more curious than ever to learn from the past to build a better future.
