Careerathon, by Mr. Gurucharan Singh Gandhi

A highly insightful session on Evolving Careers and Professional Growth was delivered by Mr. Gurucharan Singh Gandhi, Chief Human Resources Officer atVi (Vodafone Idea). The session was especially noteworthy as it also marked the launch of his book, Careerathon, which draws a compelling parallel between building a career and running a marathon.

Mr. Gandhibegan by challenging the conventional notion of a linear career path. Sharing his own journey-from earning an MBA in Marketing, working as a sales trainer in finance, transitioning to Learning and Development at the Aditya Birla Group, and eventually leading HR at the highest level-he encouraged students to embrace flexibility and non-linear growth. He emphasised that an MBA should be seen as a launchpad rather than a fixed trajectory.

He advised participants to plan with intent but without rigidity. Specialisation, he noted, should serve the purpose of building depth-not confinement. Throughout the session, he highlighted the importance of endurance over talent, noting that consistency, preparation, and the ability to thrive in less glamorous phases of work are what truly set professionals apart.

The metaphor of a career as a marathon rather than a sprint was a recurring theme. Mr. Gandhi urged students to avoid comparisons, enjoy the journey, and prioritise growth over quick wins. He spoke about valuing preparation, being mindful of one's "information diet", and avoiding the trap of setting goals that compromise well-being.

The session was both pragmatic and inspiring, offering students a grounded yet motivating perspective on how to navigate long, fulfilling careers in an ever-changing professional world.
